"Art is not wat YOU see, but what you make others see..."

A painting is a wonderful way of expressing feelings. A beautiful painting or photo is an asset to your home or office. Your living room or office will sparkle more and get a more personal and warm appearance. You often start to feel more comfortable. Often your room suddenly seems even bigger. And in a pleasant environment you are happier and 'usually' more productive.

"To me painting means asking and answering questions, making choices.
Usually I have pre-stretched the canvases and a number of them are ready, varying in size. Do I start small or do I dare big today? What music do I want to hear? Do I use a wide range of colors, or do I limit myself to a smaller palette? I linger, I linger, I walk around a bit. During this preparation I force myself to strong concentration. I try to bring my thoughts to a zero point, an emptiness. This space in my head is necessary to be open to all the subconscious that comes up while painting. Then there is no escape, I grab the brush or knife and start. What happens between me and the canvas cannot be any different than it goes. The start is often direct, impulsive and chaotic. The canvas asks questions and listens. It forces me to make choices over and over again. In this process I convert both positive and negative feelings into shape and color. My painting is applying the paint and scraping it off again, combining and separating, roughly filling and subtle drawing. It is a feverish search for an image, of which I feel, yes, this is it, at least for now. Then I literally distance myself. The canvas is left to dry for a few weeks and only now do I really start to see what I painted. Again I am faced with choices and questions still arise. One time I answer it by changing details, another time by going over it rigorously. Just as long until the image is completely my own. Then I know, the painting is finished. " |
For me art is dealing with presenting the inexpressible, ineffective, the irrelevant. Dealing with the nameless nothing-something, that which cannot be understood in a conceptual framework, beyond the words and yet so close.
For me art is a flight into silence. The pre-linguistic, the sound of nameless evocation from an infinite nostalgia for reality, the unnameable reality. My works would like to be a gesture to that which has no place, has no word, to that which always testifies to inability to appear, work after work. Style, medium and material are relative and only possibilities to find graphic solutions for portraying a nameless nothing-something that wanders between characters, shapes and colors - such as white space between words. Art "means" a lack of intimacy, touches what does not pass when everything passes. |
My work is sometimes a bit like the translation of myself in this world ...
I make both photographic and artistic work. In my artistic work, the photo is sometimes only a tool to achieve a result, in my photographic work the photo is central and there is little post-processing. I see my photographic and artistic work as two different worlds between which I constantly move back and forth. They arise from a different need to express myself and complement each other. However, as a basis there is always the photo, that image that forms somewhere in our brains and that we want to capture for eternity. |
Passioneel ...
Passionate ...
“A PAINTING PROCESS is something that grows, that takes shape, through the way you feel the act of painting, how you apply the paint to the canvas, the way you mix colors, the strokes of your brush and painter's knife. " Everyone has an opinion about Christoph's works. The reactions may differ from each other, but the fact that his works leave no one indifferent proves the great emotionality that lies behind them. This passionate approach ensures that Christoph Van Daele is very successful in a short time. More and more people admire his work. Christoph Van Daele also appears to be emotional in that area. "I am really proud when my work has a positive and emotional impact on people's world. Ultimately, that is what I want to achieve." Christoph's work is highly appreciated both at home and abroad. He receives thousands of responses from all over the world. Large galleries from New York, London and Paris are still waiting to display his work. However (for the time being) he has -for personal reasons- still made no promises in this. Christoph Van Daele's perseverance can be found in the structure of his works. They literally consist of different layers. "I start on something and hardly ever know where I will end. I keep going until I think the result is good. Often I discover a new angle while painting and do it in a different way than I first thought." This layered structure also has great symbolism. "Reality is not always what you see at first glance. To get to the essence you often first have to peel off different layers, look through a number of things, discover things by looking for a different angle. At the same time, that layering is a certain. protection The sensitive core embedded between and beneath other layers. "It also ensures that people often give a different interpretation to the same work, or see different things in it. This is also the reason why the reactions are often different." My work allows quite a lot of imagination. You are free to fill it in yourself, to have an opinion about it. It provokes discussion, apparently you can't just pass it by. It releases something. " "I have now found happiness, freedom and peace. I am very social, but I sometimes have the need to be alone. It gives a wonderful feeling to be able to create something, to add things of myself. to bring something to life. " |
About the eloquence of appearance and disappearance.
Christoph Van Daele always finds the “inspiration” for his oeuvre in landscape, man and nature. He thoughtfully explores the relationships between reality and image, between the depicted and the image that takes shape on the carrier. The recognisability remains present to a greater or lesser extent, but the sketched or painted image becomes an autonomous, sensory entity. The reality of the image constantly takes precedence over the reality of the data that is evoked. Christoph Van Daele is undoubtedly aware that in the end every representation falls short whenever he tries to capture reality in a performance. After all, representation is perhaps only an alibi for him for the very experience of the event, of the action, of the appearance and disappearance of a possible representation. It is a permanent going back and forth between construction and deconstruction, painting and repainting back to the borderline between the recognizable (meaning-giving) and the uncertain (meaningless). It is as if the painter strives for this one moment between meaning and absence, between the performance and the unimaginable. The art shows the representation as a representation. She shows how the performance emerges, how it, literally, "takes place" ... the performance questions its own appearance. In this sense, art does not allow anything to appear without at the same time returning to the event of the appearance. Christoph Van Daele finds inspiration in the direct sensory perception of the landscape, the water features, the trees, the flat land, the mountains and the human being that he records as diary entries in sketches and photographic snapshots. In painting, an autonomous process occurs that gradually obscures legibility and explores the intangible. The seemingly simplification intensifies the suggestive effect of the image as a sublimated untraceable memory. On the edge of the void, which evokes expectation, he creates a latent tension between concealed legibility and pictorial fullness. It is as if the images were finished in the unfinished tense. The viewer encounters the painter's wonder and is confronted with mystery as the essence of the work of art, which is not a representation of the world, but of being, an experience of itself in the world. The painter seems to be fascinated by the sublime, which presents itself as an experience of reality, which manages to withdraw from all categories of the mind as a kind of preverbial experience. The experience of the sublime leads to the awareness of something that transcends the world of experience ... the moment when something is no longer and is not yet meaningful. In the tactile materiality of Christoph Van Daele's paintings and drawings, the subcutaneous and the concealed vibrate, where the secret of the absent lies, which tells an unspeakable story about the wonder of perception. |

As a 'young' artist, Van Daele Christoph has a steep rise. His imagery and colors appeal to a very large audience. He expresses the spirit of our time. He recycles busy images and gives them a new and quiet life. He sometimes enlarges them or takes them out of their historical context, giving them a new meaning and thereby offering a refreshing view of the world. Sometimes his work looks very attractive, it somehow attracts the viewer to come closer and then it strikes ...

Christoph Van Daele schildert. |
The elusive landscape of Christoph Van Daele echoes.
Christoph Van Daele paints. He paints intensively. Trees, horizons, landscapes, water surfaces, the surf, these are all intangible sensations, which - once stored in Van Daele's memory - are the reason to let his reality, his landscapes and figures arise. For more than 25 years he has intensively painted landscapes and figures in an idiosyncratic way, hoping to reflect his experiences of immense views monumental and soft in the viewer's face. He often does this in series on large canvases, which after his painting act as a kind of paint mirrors to reinforce, intensify and evoke associations of nature experiences. Even as a child, Christoph Van Daele was fascinated by the vastness in his surroundings: they are places to hang thoughts in them while walking. He had time to look, time to sit and think, or not to think. Only in this silence and motionlessness did he hear and see what already is and was: space, inviolability, freedom mixed with water, leaves, stones, sun, day and night and everything that flows out of your sight and hands. Painting of the visibly elusive, of the monumental tangible, of the space and life around him: it became an inspiration, which Christoph Van Daele took on as a pleasant artistic challenge. His images are not abstractions but rather powerful intensifications of sensations into a real Van Daele landscape. Paintings and drawings are edited and reworked into almost monochrome images, testimonies of time and space. The landscapes that arise therefore have very little to do with painting landscapes, but they are symbols of memories, of a state of mind, of a desire. To do this, Van Daele senses a vertical silver birch, a watery horizontal reflection, or the light penetration of the twilight, stores these experiences and then visualizes them as memories. And even though some series of his paintings may seem abstract at first sight, a closer examination shows that signs of landscape such as a branch or a ridge remain visible from the paint material, which only serve as a reason to compose his landscape in varying pictorial translations. to a new reality. A striking feature of Van Daele's paintings is that content and form can no longer be separated from each other because his forms also function as content and the content coincides with the specific form. Perhaps that is because this artist is not in his way. He is a born painter. Observation of his environment and wonder at that nature taught him that man is not the end product of evolution, but that he is part of creation, while he can create intriguing and joyful himself. Classic cannot be. Nor is it more contemporary. After all, his theme, the landscape and man is as old as painting. It is an achievement to add an idiosyncratic variation and nuance to that. After all, Van Daele does not paint mythology or stories from the Bible, and yet you could call his work 'religious'. His paintings have a meditative effect, probably because he not only understands his craft but also because he paints enthusiastically. He paints what he thinks he should paint. Van Daele does look to art fathers and is a great admirer of painters such as Turner and Monet. He himself says about this: There is no innovation without tradition. His innovation consists in attempting to depict the visibly elusive in a landscape of this time, which in turn reflects the elusive monumental. You won't let go of this landscape and you want to see it again because the clear intimacy remains mysterious. |
The Light of the World
One of our contemporary Belgian painters, deeply engaged in the quest, is Christoph Van Daele (Liedekerke, °1969). The landscape and humanity are essential in his painting. He knows and admires the great masters, but gradually developed his own pictorial language. And it all comes down to this: 'translation'. Van Daele translates the real image, as he sees it, not just into his own aesthetic interpretation, but employs what he calls a 'pictorial logic': a logic that senses the character of the surface of the canvas and the paint skin, touches and molds the matter of the paint, and offers the subject in a completely new form to the viewer. In doing so, the painting (or the photo) is detached from the actual subject, it stands on its own. In essence, Christoph does what is essential to painting, unlike most other forms of visual art: he creates with hand and mind, by applying paint to canvas, a completely new image. Typically in his work, he sometimes gives it a more figurative, other times a more abstracting character. Dealing with the new image is dealing with the freedom that the painter, each time anew, possesses. And that freedom is very specific for Christoph Van Daele: for him, it is about seeking innovation in the visual language, while respecting the 'old' medium of painting. 'Darkness' is central in his works: not the pure black (which he hardly uses, by the way), but the play of minimal light and maximal dark, the handling of color, light, and paint ensures that the painter is no longer dealing with a landscape, but with an in-depth pictorial investigation into form and balance. Even in the lighter works, Van Daele applies various layers, mixes different shades, always searching for the ideal light, which falls like a veil over the canvases. Whether Van Daele paints a landscape, a forest, a tree, a branch, or a flower: the figurative element more or less remains, but unmistakably retreats to make room for all possible forms of light. In the series 'Waterlines,' this is taken to the extreme: here you see reflections on the water, the reflection of vegetative elements, the undulating effect of the horizontal lines. Christoph Van Daele creates images, pregnant with what six centuries of painting have already produced, but at the same time so concentrated and refined that they bear a remarkably strong personal signature, the hand of the master who leads the viewer's gaze to where he wants it: to the world, at a certain place, a certain day, a certain hour, with a certain light and a certain atmosphere. The world of light, the light of the world. |
THE SUBLIME.
Regarding the work of Christoph Van Daele Beauty has been described since Ancient Greek times with classical definitions such as 'unity in diversity' or 'proportion' and 'harmony'. This formal approach suggests that the conditions for Beauty lie within the physical form of the object being considered. Terms like 'genius' and 'imagination' undoubtedly refer to the talent of the one who creates something beautiful (the artist), while 'taste' usually typifies the ability of the viewer to appreciate that beautiful thing, to aesthetically enjoy it. Christoph Van Daele's fascination with the monumental scale of expansive horizons, an immense view of the sea or infinite, rugged coastlines, and his detailed adoration for the whimsical play of branches reflected on a rippling water surface, or the wild elegance of a gnarled orchard, is a contemporary, less tormented counterpart to the Romantic artists' urge to experience and depict sublimity. Like them, Van Daele Christoph fervently seeks a nature experience that gives him an extra thrill. The painter captures acquired impressions and observations in a first materialization in the form of on-the-spot photographs and spontaneous, in situ realized study sketches. The camera lens and the artist's gaze act as mechanical and subjective filters. A first alienation on the way from reality to canvas. Time allows his lived observations to further settle into vaguer memories and adds some personal aroma. The temporal filter does its work. Finally, in the studio, the artist lets his landscapes mature on canvas. Especially Van Daele's paintings are the result of an extremely thorough maturation process. In the rich paint mixtures of the first layer on the canvas, figurative elements are often discernible. Layer after layer, that base image layer is carefully painted over with an almost monochrome, translucent mist of brushstrokes. During this pictorial filtration, the painter explores the boundary between an image dominated by absence and emptiness and an abstraction within which presence and suggestion find space. The figurative beacons of the base image layer undergo an image reduction process and serve as eye-guiding orientation points in his stylized landscape paintings. The composition schemes Van Daele employs testify to his admiration for old landscape masters. In line with traditional landscape painting, Christoph Van Daele remains fascinated by the artistic challenge of developing, through an original and recognizable visual language, a contemporary response to how an artist can capture his personal feeling of the timeless poetics of nature on canvas. In his case, this is done with almost monochrome, often horizontally expansive paintings in which light grey-veined pastel greens, muted yellows, and pale pinks exude bittersweet longing or the glow of an indefinable figure thrives as a beacon within the dark melancholy of deep and intense blacks. |
Poezie ...
Poetry...
I feel a connection with expressionism. This is due to the freedom and spontaneity in the way of painting. I don't often paint based on reality. The act of painting itself, applying brushstrokes, drips, colors, or textures, is the focus of my work. My paintings don't have a subject; they are the subject themselves. There's also a musical influence on my work. This allows me to translate my musical experience into visual language. In doing so, I carefully choose my colors, believing they will combine beautifully. Sometimes, I add lyrical elements such as elements from nature, causing my work to balance on the edge of abstraction and figuration. Through this style of painting, I aim to show the viewer that a painting doesn't have to end on the canvas, but I want to encourage them to create their own world. Partly for this reason, I consider my art in a certain way as a piece of poetry. |
Christoph Van Daele is a contemporary artist whose evocative paintings of natural forms encompass so much energy, movement, and mystery as to be endlessly engaging.
Using a single image of a flower as his subject, he captures the fleeting effect of natural phenomena and immortalizes the transitory nature of life. With his unique vision, profound sense of color, and a glazing technique inherent in the 17th Century Dutch Master Paintings, Christoph's work elicits a fresh perspective and a deep insight into the familiar.
Embarking on his second career as a fine artist, Christoph was naturally drawn to using flora and nature as his subject. Now, unencumbered by the technical parameters of commercial design, Christoph has the freedom of unrestricted composition combined with his love for the purity and sensuality of oil paint to explore and express his vision.

Realistically portraying what he sees in the world is not Christoph Van Daele's goal as an artist. Painting is about communicating the spirit of a place that he feels. We often forget to see the many layers of the reality around us.
"When I paint I feel I am on a journey which for unveils a deeper layer of seeing. My artwork happens when I get out of the way of the magic. In this process I surrender to becoming a vehicle of expression.
It is clear to me that the gift of communicating as an artist is not something I possess; it is something I am blessed to channel through my body and soul. In those magical moments of inspiration, I am somewhere between remembering and listening.
It is a daily practice for me to allow the visions to flow from a wordless place. I feel I am in the presence of a great teacher while doing this work. It is my prayer that the wise voices, visions, memories, messages, spirit animals, magical beings, ancestors, sacred lands, and faery folk continue to knock on my door."

There is a vibrant warmth in Christoph Van Daele paintings that is at once invigorating and inviting. With a stroke both fluid and sweeping Christoph draws viewers into his world, building vividly bright forms of imagination and delight that fill his lively surfaces with vitality and spirit.
Capturing scenes of serenity and wonder the artist moves freely between subjects, prolifically creating images of still lifes, landscapes, fantastic creatures, and figures tenderly entwined in a sensuous dance of repose. Christoph’s inspired and joyously explosive use of color celebrates the richness of life and love, glowing with the hues and language of dreams.

In Christoph Van Daele's drawings something is brewing under the skin. His female figures are seemingly esthetic. And even the environments in which he places the female figures are not as lovely as they look at first sight.
Keeping up appearances is a common theme in the work of Christoph Van Daele. The female figures have something unapproachable and mysterious about them. Faces are hidden, or partially masked. The work is literally and figuratively layered.
